Overview
The NIH Validation Service allows an institution to run validations on S2S proposals against eCommons so you can catch relevant errors/warnings prior to submission. In addition to the system validations that are driven from Grants.gov form requirements, NIH submissions are also validated against application guide instructions and instructions found in the funding opportunity announcements (FOAs). For example, checking page limit requirements, NIH eCommons user names, attachment requirements, etc.
When the NIH Validation Service is configured and enabled (more info on that below) then the NIH validations will display in the proposal in the validation window. These validations will only display when the baseline information has been entered (PI, budget, required info, etc.). These NIH validations can be identified by the label of Validation Service Error or Validation Service Warning and the rule number at the beginning of the message is listed (i.e. 010.2.1 - 96).
Required Setup
There is some setup required to configure your Kuali Research environments to include the NIH
Validation Service. If a hosted customer, simply submit a zendesk support ticket and we'll work with you to get this set up in your environments. More info on this setup process for hosted and on-prem customers can be found in the Configuring Kuali Research with NIH eCommons Validation Service article.
Parameters
Once your Kuali Research environments are configured to point to the eRA Commons sites, you will need to then enable the service via the Enable_NIH_Validation_Service parameter by changing the value to Y. Be aware of the below parameters related to the NIH Validation Service:
- Enable_NIH_Service - parameter to enable the NIH Validation Service.
- Enable_NIH_Service_Caching - improves performance when NIH Validation is enabled; the recommended value is Y if the NIH Validation Service is turned on.
- Show_Section_In_Data_Validation - will improve the display of eCommons validations in the Validation popup window; the recommended value is N if the NIH Validation Service is turned on.
NIH Validation Mapping table
The NIH Validation Mapping table in the Maintenance tab works in conjunction with the NIH Validation Service and the errors/warnings that are transmitted by NIH when checking an NIH S2S proposal. This maintenance table gives institutions the ability to customize the user-received validation messages and fix-it links associated with the NIH Validation Service when the Enable_NIH_Validation_Service parameter is set to Y. Bootstrap data is available to load this table with validations you may want to alter/configure that may best serve your business processes. More information on this functionality can be found in the NIH Validation Mapping article.
