As we look to continue to enhance Researcher/Admin exchanges within Kuali Protocols at the request of the community, Kuali has addressed some of these pain points through the editing process of a protocol. Recently, the team introduced new functionality that allows a Researcher to openly edit any desired field within their protocol when that particular protocol is in an editable state. We have already applied this new functionality to your STG and SBX environments and plan to enable in PRD end of day on Friday, November 13th.
In previous iterations of Kuali Protocols, users would be required to click an ‘edit’ button in order to edit a corresponding field’s data. In situations where an Admin had assigned an Action Item to a field during their review process and then taken an action that warranted sending a protocol back to the Researcher, the Researcher may have intermittently faced an issue where the editing restrictions on their protocol did not allow them to address Admin Action Items. In the case of Amendments, users were restricted to only editing fields that were initially edited in the creation of their protocol. The community at large felt that this resulted in slow, tedious protocol revisions and adjustments.
Ultimately, this new functionality within Kuali Protocols will allow Researchers the ability to edit the entirety of their protocol form, sans ‘Edit’ buttons, across the following states: Amend, Renew/Amend, Return to Researcher, and Revisions Required. Additionally, in states such as Close Request, editing is still limited to the relevant sections of the protocol, albeit without ‘Edit’ buttons next to each form field.

In the image above, a sample protocol in a Returned to Researcher state now allows the Researcher to edit any desired fields without having to click an ‘Edit’ button.
