Within Kuali Protocols, the Manage Protocols page houses the bulk of protocol information that impacts the direct workflow of both Administrators and Researchers. While the life cycle and submission timelines of protocols can vary, protocol queues inevitably grow to contain a number of protocols that are created, unlikely to be submitted, and retain their ‘In Progress’ status as they continue to sit within Manage Protocols.
In order to clear a potentially cluttered Manage Protocols view, safeguard sensitive protocol data, and gather accurate protocol information within filtering results, both Administrators and Researchers are now able to delete ‘In Progress’ protocols that have never been submitted for review. Protocols that retain their ‘In Progress’ status must first be ‘Abandoned’, which will then present the user an option to delete the protocol and its associated history. This delete option is available for initial new protocols only that have not been submitted and it is not available for initiated Amendments, Renewals, etc.

In the image above, a protocol that was ‘In Progress’ had never been submitted. With the option to delete selected protocols configured, the user first took the ‘Abandon’ action on their protocol and then selected ‘Delete’. The warning modal pictured above prompts the user to confirm their action.
Deleting these protocols is entirely optional and designed to allow for both Administrators and Researchers to optimize their workflow and protect their data as they see fit. As such, once the configuration option 'Allow deletion of protocols never submitted' is selected by System Administrators in IRB Configuration or IACUC Configuration, users with appropriate permissions are able to remove these protocols from their queue.
